I’m not comfortable about all the Oscar Pistorius jokes already on the web – ‘And the Oscar goes to … jail’ – or, ‘New evidence has been found outside the Pistorius home that completely acquits him of his girlfriend’s murder: footprints’ – but it was only to be expected. It is the story itself that counts. It is why tabloid journalism exists, and always will. Who could have predicted such news? For the tabloids it beats OJ, it beats Sven-Göran Eriksson and Ulrika Jonsson, it beats Tiger Woods and Lance Armstrong (and there’s even another Twitterati sick-quip tagging Pistorius on to the end of those names with: ‘I think Nike should start telling their athletes, ‘Don’t Do It’). A meteor hit Russia today but the main story has been Pistorius charged with the premeditated murder of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp – causing an uproar because The Sun then published a front page picture of Steenkamp in … wait for it … a bikini. Well, she was actually a swimwear model and an FHM model. News is news. If you don’t like it, don’t buy The Sun.
